Here Are X Things to Consider Before Getting Lash Extensions

Lash extensions are the latest craze for a reason—they can transform your look in an instant. You’ve probably seen women out there and wondered how their lashes look so big and beautiful (and natural). Is it a certain product? Well, the answer is pretty simple. They likely have lash extensions.

If you’ve wondered about trying it for yourself, here are nine things to consider before getting lash extensions.

Lash extensions feel heavy at first

Your natural lashes have been with you your entire life. These new lash extensions, not so much. So prepare yourself to feel a bit of a weight adjustment on your eyes when you first get lash extensions as they will feel heavy at first (you’re adding something to your face, it’s normal). It’s a mild adjustment but nothing you won’t get used to in a matter of days.

They will last one to two months

Your lash extensions are time-consuming to apply for a reason. They are made to last! As you consider getting lash extensions also keep in mind that they will last you several weeks and cannot be taken off. So, while yes the heaviness is an adjustment at first, as is your new breathtaking look, it is worth it in the end. You’ll get used to it in no time.

You’ll need to clean them frequently

The more your lash extensions get wet the slower the adhesive will begin to deteriorate and come off. That’s natural—water wears things away a little at a time. But as tempting as it can be to skip certain cleansing routines for the sake of your new look, it’s also irresponsible to go without cleaning your lashes. While you certainly don’t need to rigorously rub soap and water, or your normal cleanser, all over your eyes as you might otherwise do, you should maintain a consistent and frequent lash extension cleaning schedule. This will ensure that your eyes don’t become infected or swollen through bacteria that can cause itching or irritation. If you’re a cautious person who can take small, but careful steps to lash extension care then it will be easy for you to maintain a frequent cleaning routine. And be sure to brush them from time to time, the way you would your own hair, for a softer and more dramatic appearance.

Think about what material you want

Silk, faux mink, mink, sable, fox, or synthetic, are all lash extension materials to choose from. Choose the best one for your look, your budget, and your potential allergies. Mink is, of course, the most expensive and may not be the best option for animal advocates. However, the mink is very lightweight and has a fluff factor. Sable is considered the lightest lash extension material available and is also made up of animal fur (fox also falls into this category, although it’s more readily available and better for redheads with the natural reddish tone). Silk lashes tend to be the heaviest option but have a real wow factor so they can be the perfect choice for special occasions.  Meanwhile, as the least expensive, synthetic materials are the heaviest.

As you think this over, consider your allergies

If you are remotely sensitive to certain materials, imagine what it will be like to have this material on your eyes—all day and night, for weeks! Beyond just what the lash extensions are made of you also have to think about the formaldehyde that exists in the lash adhesive, that keeps your lash extensions attached to you.

You can get them professionally done

As pricey as it may be, getting lash extensions professionally done can save you time and worry. When you look up a salon check to see that they are certified and work up to the standards that the state requires. The last thing you want is a subpar lash extension because the price [seemed] right, or less expensive, and your eyes suffer as a result. If it’s cheap and easy, then you likely will end up with a problematic application that will leave you with a lot of regrets. If you’re going to get lash extensions then splurge on the price and get them done at a salon that is clean, up to date, and up to code. Sure, your wallet might not be as happy but your health certainly will.

Your initial visit to a salon can take a bit

Each lash extension visit can take anywhere from one and a half to two hours of time. That’s not like a normal haircut, where you can look around. Eyelash extensions require your eyes to be shut, the entire time, so that can be properly attached and applied. If you’re one to fidget around or are impatient, find a way to stay awake but also calm during this process. You can listen to an audiobook or try a meditation app.

If you’re comfortable, there are DIY lash extensions

DIY lash extensions are considerably less expensive than having your lash extensions professionally done (especially over time). The same as with a salon, you have plenty of options to choose from and styles. As you shop for DIY lash extensions be sure to look up tutorials on how to do it yourself and check that the seller is certified and up to code. It might seem like the more daunting way to go, versus a salon, but if you choose the right brand and seller it can actually be your best friend for your new beauty routine and look.

Both in a salon and DIY lash extensions are able to be customized

Everyone’s eyes are different so it only makes sense that lash extensions have the ability to be customized to your eyes. Beyond the length, which is what most people think of when considering lash extensions, you can also decide what type of curl (how dramatic), how wide you want them (we’ve all seen the big doe eyes versus the more subtle extensions), and all different kinds of styles. There are even options to have one section at the end versus the middle, longer than the others. (anewcareer)

Conclusion

As you take the time to consider lash extensions, be confident in your new look and know that once applied, you will become an automatic head turner.
