Many college students don’t prioritize self-care. It’s easy to forget about a task when you are so busy with classes, extracurriculars, and final exams. And you may know there are times when the only thing you can do is lie on the bed and thoughts like “I should do my science homework” but there is no will and power to do anything. However, it is important to maintain your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Don’t let your body and mind get too stressed out or overworked. These self-care strategies and tips can help you take care of your body and mind.

Take some alone-time

You may share a room with other people, making privacy difficult. Make it your mission to find a quiet spot on campus that you can call your own. You can find a quiet corner in the library or a spot in the quad that is quiet, or even an empty classroom, where you can recharge and unwind.

Take a mindful walk around campus

This mindfulness exercise can help you to relax and center yourself while walking to class. Pay attention to the people and places around you as you walk. You can people-watch and pay close attention to your surroundings. However, sensory details such as the scent of nearby barbecues or the feel of the pavement beneath your shoes are important. You should take note of at most five interesting or beautiful things that you see along your route. You may feel a bit calmer once you get to your destination.

You’ll smell something soothing

Although the dorm bathroom may not be a spa, a good body wash or shower gel can add luxury to your day. Aromatherapy oils and room sprays can make your dorm space smell wonderful and enhance your mood. Peppermint or lavender can be used to calm stress and provide an energy boost.

How much sleep are you getting each night? If you sleep an average of seven hours a night, then commit to getting at least eight hours each night. You’re bound to find one that interests you.

Get Moving

Turn on the most energetic Spotify playlist and dance in your dorm. Get your running shoes on and take a run in the afternoon. You can join a group exercise class at the campus gym. You can set aside 45 minutes to do the activity that motivates you to move. You don’t have to be overwhelmed by work to get moving. A quick workout can boost your mood and give you more energy.

Do not be afraid to say yes or no

You can take a break if you find it difficult to accept fun invitations due to your busy schedule. On the other hand, if you are a person who says yes to everything, it is okay to prioritize your needs by saying no with these self-care strategies.

Take an off-campus adventure

Sometimes it is the best way for you to recharge is to get out of your comfort zone and explore new surroundings. Plan to explore the surrounding area and get out of campus. Go to a bookstore, go to the movies, visit a hairdresser, or take a walk in a park. You can travel further if you have public or campus transport. You will be reminded of the vast world beyond your college campus by getting away. Take time to enjoy it.

Set up an appointment with a counselor or therapist

You can schedule your first appointment if you have been meaning to. Take a few moments to call the school’s health center. A good therapist can help you deal with stress and negative emotions in a positive, productive manner. Although it can seem scary to take the first step towards feeling better, it is the most important act of self-care.
