Payne won the 2015 Melbourne Cup riding Prince of Penzance, the first and only female jockey to win the event. The youngest child of ten of Paddy and Mary Payne, Michelle J. Payne already dreamt of being a winning jockey when she was a kid.

She won in her very first race at the Ballarat track, and was riding a horse trained by her father. Her major wins also include the top Australian female jockey as well as the 2009 Toorak Handicap on Allez Wonder.
